Renovation of existing three-bedroom heritage house in Swellendam

The renovation of this existing three-bedroom heritage house in Swellendam required space-saving planning to ease the out dated and awkward flow of the house, and to make the most of the existing space.

This meant most of the internal structure had to be gutted, to update old finishes and layout.

To honour the history of the house, it was treated as a whole, but with two distinctly different atmospheres: the original thick-walled, stone-clad main house as a cosy den; and the later added dining/kitchen area as a more modern, sun-drenched space. No square meter-age was added to the existing house, but reconfiguring it created ample room for a family of four.

This is now a compact, well-panned 156sqm family home, reworked on a tight budget.
